Senator Donald Oliver

Nova Scotia's Senator

Speeches

In my first speech in the Senate, I promised Canadians that I would provide a strong voice for the people of Nova Scotia. I also committed to continue my work on issues of concern to Canada's visible minorities.

Here is an except from this speech:

"I want to join my voice with other senators from Nova Scotia in making that contribution and in bringing Nova's Scotia's unique point of view to issues of national concern.... Finally, through my appointment to the Senate, I believe I can represent Black Nova Scotians, and visible minorities throughout the country. As a member of both communities, I understand the need to combat racism whenever it appears and to provide equal opportunities to all regardless of the colour of their skin." -Jan. 24, 1991.

Since my appointment I have made speeches and participated actively in debates on a broad range of issues including, but not limited to, ethical business practices, corporate social responsibility, ethnic diversity and government accountability.

This page contains access to most of the speeches I have delivered since my appointment to Senate in 1990. You may choose to browse through the speech summaries, or search a speech by either date or topic.
